"A good disciple should take the negative expressions of the teacher in the right spirit"

Teaching learning music

A teacher and a student used to have a very strong bond at least in a traditional authoritarian teaching method which has been sustaining from a long period of time.In Indian tradition, the oral transmission is considered as one of the prior way to teach students. This kind of teaching is totally teachers' centric and the teacher gets dictatorship. Besides, in this authoritarian kind, one can begin with conception making of the concerned subject and make the students able to memorise knowledge or information. It had been followed where the teacher teaches the lessons orally to the students. This is the case in teaching music or some ancient scriptures such as the vedas and the shrutis. Similarly the case of learning ancient music can also be traced back where the target behaviour in a musical learning situation in an authoritarian teaching produces exactly a musical phrase or a few notes in exactly the same way as the teacher. In a musical situation of the sort, it is generally a positive reinforcement with more talented students. But before reaching the stage,a student has to learn the basics thoroughly, which involve patience practice on the part of the student and equal or more amount of patience to teach on the part of the teacher. Often teachers may feel that continuous positive reinforcement can make a student overestimate his capacities and lead to a deterioration in musical developement rathar than a progress. They may feel continuous praise or appreciation may be more hazardous. But it is not like so!

A Guru whom is believed to be perceived through meditation or many angles finding many points to do an self development or improvement and hence often uses negative reinforcement so as to controll the student as well as to help to make a progress. Hence, a teacher in a authoritarian teaching is also a task master while outsiders seem to be praising his student. Therefore, it is believed that a good student should take the negative expressions of his teacher but in the right spirit.Students whom are bright in their lifestyle with music and it's practices, it's quite sure that they are always sharp in memories and able to repeat a phrase quickly. They also show other desired behaviours such as improvising the phrases, creatively producing more musical talents etc.Its the learning and practising the various ragas, dhruva sangeet in a definite time of a day or night. Hence, teaching learning music in an authoritarian teaching method is more practised than read or write. There is no elevation of teaching and learning space, but of course there are some rules or niti to do practices in respect of age and experience of the student. Thus, the authoritarian teaching learning not only creates a limitation with the use of space and time factors. But it helps to nourish a good student to become an obedient disciple who none other than gets enough scope to find out his or her own capability to exist in a field. An authoritarian teaching hence is way to live a complete life with tradition and wisdom. Therefore, why not to proceed with a spirit of good disciple under our teachers and help ourselves as well as the teachers to take out the negative expressions in the right spirit? Its all about going with old souls in our mind with love, gratitude and with a mind of tremendous energy.
